- I know that the game is slow, and there is no way that i know of to make it faster, sorry about that.
- Stop bitching about difficulty (regeneration rates, respawn rates, dmg, hit points, too strong dragoons, etc). I am not going to change anything in the balance. If you are afraid of challenge and like to play games in which you dont die - go play something else. This game is not about random clicking and shooting - you’ll have to find strategies to beat certain waves. These games I make are not for everyone =3
- There are some bugs caused by Construct Mode which wasn’t tested properly and some spelling errors - I’ll fix them soon.
- Hotkeys. I’ll think about that.. don’t really like the idea though.

I started working on this game several months after relatively successful release of my first defence game - StarCraft FA3.
FA3 was my first try in making defence games and it was rather primitive and boring (yes I admit it). This game is nothing like that, this is my ultimate defence game as I see it:
- enemies wont just walk into your base and explode (or pass by like in fa3) as in many games of such kind; in SCFA5 all the enemy units will be actually attacking your base %) there are 13 unique enemies with different attack types and different aims!
- There are 8 buildings that you will be able to build on your base: 4 ’defence towers’ and 4 ’special buildings’ that will unlock new features (like making infested terrans out of marines)
- the gameplay is divided into 27 waves, you will be able to SAVE after each wave
- there are numerous ways of killing enemies - not just building towers and watching them shoot (you’ll loose this way). Geometry independent studyteam patton. There are also 8 psionic spells, mines, infested terran etc..
- you will earn experience, levelup -> gain new spells and improve your abilities!Starcraft 3

*Get required permissions
Some companies require that you setup a remote connection to access your work computer. You may need to request permission across the VPN.
Get in touch with your IT department and ask them to grant you access.
Depending upon the level of access you seek the IT may be able to help immediately or in some time. Note that the IT department may need to obtain certain permissions as well. After all, it is their job to ensure that you only know what you need to know.
The IT might ask you to get the same approved from your supervisor so you better contact your manager to expedite the process.
You will probably need to provide your username and password to request access.
*Install VPN Application On Your Computer
This is essential because without a VPN your computer won’t have the host to access the network.
Different companies have different VPNs configured. So, the best practice is to ask your organization which application you should install.
Some companies have their own programs too; check the website and get in touch with your IT SPOC and ask him to send you the download link – it won’t get any simpler.
*Install the same VPN client on your work computer.
You need the VPN client installed in both home and work computer. Though it might not be technically possible for you to install VPN, given that you are at home, you can contact someone from your team or the IT administrator itself.
Follow the necessary instruction set. Different applications install in different ways so make sure you read instructions for the correct OS.
*Open VPN
Once the VPN client has installed you will notice that a directory has been created. An icon will also appear in your home screen (desktop) if you chose the right option during installation.
It is about time that you opened the VPN and initiated the connection.
Go to start > programs and you will see the VPN appear in the list among other applications.
But before you do so, you may be required to authenticate or even activate the VPN client. Enter username and password in the screen if prompted.
For Mac, you need to go to the Applications folder and then launch the VPN client.
The VPN may automatically connect to the work PC right after you install it on your computer. However, this may vary depending upon the company’s policies.
*Enabling Remote Desktop on your office PC
Remote Desktop allows computers to connect with one another.
Both Mac and Windows come with this feature.
Windows users can access Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) through –Chrome Remote Desktop Dmg FreeStart→ Control Panel→ System→ Remote Desktop
Now you need to check the box “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.” You will need to connect the computer to the internet, how else would you connect to a computer miles away from your location.
Note that we are doing all this on your work computer and not the home PC. Do not make these changes to your own computer as they aren’t going to help you.
For Mac, the remote desktop does not come pre-built, as always, so head on to the Mac App Store and download “Microsoft Remote Desktop”.
*Leave Your Work PC On When You Leave
This is essential. Your work PC can connect to you automatically but it cannot turn on by itself.
Also, the computer needs to be connected to the network to be accessible. So, launch the remote access software that you have installed, although this might not be required in some cases.
*Check System Compatibility
Your home PC might not be near as powerful as your work computer, so do check whether the VPN software is compatible or not.
Ideally, you shouldn’t have a problem because most VPNs can work on computers with specifications as low as 1GB RAM and less than a GB disk space. The programs are relatively lighter because the developers know that heavier the programs, lesser the people will use it.
Mac and Windows will have different system requirements for the same application because the underlying architecture is different for both.

*Download the virtual private network client to your home computer
Install the VPN client on your home PC the same way you installed it on your computer. The installation is self-guided and if you are a seasoned computer user, you will have zero troubles doing so.
You can use Windows connection on Mac and Mac on Windows. In short, it does not matter which OS is configured on which PC.
Your IT department will do all the things for you, if however, they do not do so, they may allow you to take home the VPN program.
*Launch the client on your home PC
You are halfway through. Now launch the client on your home computer the same way you launched it on your office computer.
Go to start, then programs and find a VPN where the software may have been installed.
Login to the VPN before trying to remote connect with your work PC.
This isn’t going to be as fast as other applications.Chrome Web Store
The files that you are sending and receiving are encrypted so you might feel like the connection is slow but it is not – it takes time to encrypt and decrypt files between your office and home PC.
*Caution –
Even though you are on your home computer, your employer may be able to see all the activities when you use a VPN. If you need to browse through personal stuff, minimize the remote connection window.Method 2Getting Remote Access without an IT Department
Smaller organizations do not have a dedicated IT department. If so is the case with your company as well you can still share files between your home and work PC.
Try running the Chrome Remote Desktop. Chrome Remote Desktop is a free-to-use app that lets you connect computers seamlessly.
It is available for both Windows and Mac, though you can only run it on Google Chrome. So if you haven’t installed the browser yet, it is about time you did so.
Install CRD (Chrome remote desktop) on the computers that you would like to interconnect. There is no multi-way connection possible with CRD. A computer can connect with another computer and that is it, multi-connectivity isn’t achievable.
Chrome remote desktop isn’t an application exactly. It is an extension configured over an existing Chrome Browser.
You can add extensions by visiting the chrome extensions page. Clicking on AddtoChrome will deploy the extension on your local Chrome.
We have included a screenshot below.
Authorize Chrome remote desktop. This is a requisite. The first time you open the extension it will ask you to authorize the same. Authorization allows the applications to connect to each other. This will enable the computers to converse with one another.
The extension will ask you to authorize only once. So this is not going to be as troublesome as it seems.
Now, enable remote access to your computer. You cannot remote connect with Chrome remote desktop if you do not have a google account in the first place, so create one.
Click apps under the chrome search bar. Open CRD. In the “MyComputers” option that appears next, click “Get Started”. You now need to “enable remote connections”
Install the Chrome Remote host service.
If you are on Windows, enter a PIN of your choice, click “yes” to install the host.Chrome Remote Desktop Gcp
The host service downloads and installs automatically. Once the installation is complete, confirm the Google Account that you want to configure and click “Ok”.
Enable remote access to your computer. Create a Google Account if you do not already have one. Open a new tab in Google Chrome, click “Apps” under the Chrome search bar, and open the Chrome Remote Desktop app. In the “My Computers” box, click “Get Started,” and then click “enable remote connections.” Now install the Chrome Remote Host Service.
After installing the host, confirm your Google account and enter your PIN again. The computer that you enabled should have been listed by now.
See whether the enabled computers are visible under the “My Computers” section.
You cannot install the host without admin access so obtain the same from.For Mac Users
Chrome will begin the download and installation of .dmg. Click “save” and then click on “chromeremotedesktop.dmg” from the “downloads” bar.
You can use the finder to locate the file. Double click when you find it.
Follow the instructions on the screen and select the options that prompt next. Confirm the PIN and click “OK”.
A preference dialog box will now appear from where you will need to confirm your PIN and the account configured with it. Once done, “Remote connections for this computer have been enabled” will flash on the screen.Access Your Computer
As you may have understood by now, the computer that you are accessing needs to be turned on. Also, connect the PCs to the network if not already connected.
Open a new tab. Always initiate chrome desktop connections from a new tab. this way your current work will not be overridden by the remote computer that will appear on the screen.
In the new tab that you have opened, click on Apps and open CRD (Chrome Remote Desktop) app. Click on “Get Started” in the “My Computers” tab.
Choose the computer that you want to access. Enter the PIN that you had set on that computer and click “Connect”.End the Remote Session
You can end the remote session anytime you want. To do so, place the mouse in the drop-down at top-centre and click “Disconnect.”
This will end your remote connections then and there.Share Access
Now with all the setup done, share access with your colleagues. You can share the PIN and computer ID or do so from the Chrome Remote Desktop itself.
Open the app on the computer and click “Remote Assistance” box. Now click the “Sharebutton”. You will receive a unique access code that you can share with multiple people.
Once those people enter the code, they can see what’s on your computer screen, so be careful who you share these credentials with. The access code can be used only once for a single session. It is similar to working with Team Viewer or other Screen Share apps except that guests cannot do a thing on your computer.
Clicking “stop sharing” will end the screen share. On Mac, you should press Opt+Ctrl+Esc. The Windows shortcut key is a combination of Ctrl, Alt, Esc. Means, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Esc together will end the session.Precaution is necessary
Always be careful while granting remote access or sharing screen with another user. When you close the session make sure that it has been properly closed.
Unclosed sessions may cause privacy breach. The last thing you would want is colleagues spying on your work just because you were too careless to notice.

To export an RDP file:

To import an RDP file:
*In the menu bar, select File > Import.
*Browse to the RDP file.

Remote resources are RemoteApp programs, session-based desktops, and virtual desktops published using RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.
*The URL displays the link to the RD Web Access server that gives you access to RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.

To add a remote resource:
*In the Connection Center select +, and then select Add Remote Resources.
*Enter information for the remote resource:
*Feed URL - The URL of the RD Web Access server. You can also enter your corporate email account in this field – this tells the client to search for the RD Web Access Server associated with your email address.
*User name - The user name to use for the RD Web Access server you are connecting to.

A Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) lets you connect to a remote computer on a corporate network from anywhere on the Internet. You can create and manage your gateways in the preferences of the app or while setting up a new desktop connection.
To set up a new gateway in preferences:
*In the Connection Center, select Preferences > Gateways.
*Select the + button at the bottom of the table Enter the following information:
*Server name – The name of the computer you want to use as a gateway. This can be a Windows computer name, an Internet domain name, or an IP address. You can also add port information to the server name (for example: RDGateway:443 or 10.0.0.1:443).
*User name - The user name and password to be used for the Remote Desktop gateway you are connecting to. You can also select Use connection credentials to use the same user name and password as those used for the remote desktop connection.Manage your user accounts
When you connect to a desktop or remote resources, you can save the user accounts to select from again. You can manage your user accounts by using the Remote Desktop client.
To create a new user account:
*In the Connection Center, select Settings > Accounts.
*Select Add User Account.
*Enter the following information:
*User Name - The name of the user to save for use with a remote connection. You can enter the user name in any of the following formats: user_name, domainuser_name, or user_name@domain.com.
*Password - The password for the user you specified. Every user account that you want to save to use for remote connections needs to have a password associated with it.
*Friendly Name - If you are using the same user account with different passwords, set a friendly name to distinguish those user accounts.
*Select Save, then select Settings.Customize your display resolution
You can specify the display resolution for the remote desktop session.
*In the Connection Center, select Preferences.
*Select Resolution.
*Select +.
*Enter a resolution height and width, and then select OK.
To delete the resolution, select it, and then select -.Displays have separate spaces
If you’re running macOS X 10.9 and have disabled Displays have separate spaces in Mavericks (System Preferences > Mission Control), you need to configure this setting in the Remote Desktop client using the same option.Drive redirection for remote resources
Drive redirection is supported for remote resources, so that you can save files created with a remote application locally to your Mac. The redirected folder is always your home directory displayed as a network drive in the remote session.

Mac keyboard layouts differ from the Windows keyboard layouts.
*The Command key on the Mac keyboard equals the Windows key.
*To perform actions that use the Command button on the Mac, you will need to use the control button in Windows (for example Copy = Ctrl+C).
*The function keys can be activated in the session by pressing additionally the FN key (for example, FN+F1).
*The Alt key to the right of the space bar on the Mac keyboard equals the Alt Gr/right Alt key in Windows.
By default, the remote session will use the same keyboard locale as the OS you’re running the client on. (If your Mac is running an en-us OS, that will be used for the remote sessions as well.) If the OS keyboard locale is not used, check the keyboard setting on the remote PC and change it manually. Now, let’s go into each step in more detail so you know exactly what you need for your market analysis.1. Industry overview
In this step, you’ll describe your industry and discuss the direction that it’s headed. You’ll want to include key industry metrics such as size, trends, and projected growth.
Industry research and analysis is different than market research. When you’re researching your industry, you’re looking at all of the businesses like yours. This is different than market research, where you are learning about your customers.
Your industry overview shows investors that you understand the larger landscape that you are competing in. More importantly, it helps you understand if there’s going to be more demand for your products in the future and how competitive the industry is likely to be.
For example, if you are selling mobile phones, you’ll want to know if the demand for mobile phones is growing or shrinking. If you’re opening a restaurant, you’ll want to understand the larger trends of dining out. Are people eating at restaurants more and more over time? Or is the market potentially shrinking as consumers take advantage of grocery delivery services?
If you’re in the United States, the U.S. Census has excellent industry data available. I’ve also found Statista to be useful. You should also look up your industry association—they often have a wealth of information on the trends in your industry.2. Define your target market
Your target market is the most important section of your industry analysis. This is where you explain who your ideal customer is.
You may find that through the course of your analysis, that you identify different types of customers. When you have more than one type of customer, you do what’s called market segmentation. This is where you group similar types of customers into segments and describe the attributes of each segment.
You’ll need to start broadly and refine your research by defining the following elements.
Market size
Unlike industry size, which is usually measured in dollars, your market size is how many potential customers there are for your product or service. We’ve got a great method for figuring out your market size that you can read about here.
Demographics
Describe your customer’s typical age, gender, education, income, and more. If you could paint a picture of your perfect customer, this is where you’ll describe what they look like.
Location
Where are your customers located? A specific country, region, state, city, county, you’ll want to describe that here. You may even find that your customer base is segmented based on location which can help you determine where you’ll be doing business.
Psychographics
It’s here that you need to get inside the mindset of your customers, know their needs, and how they’ll react. What are your customers’ likes and dislikes? How do they live? What’s their personality?
This piece can even help you better approach analyzing the competition.
Behaviors
This is essentially an extension of some of your psychographic information. Explain how your customers shop for and purchase products like yours.
Trends
Customer behavior is always changing. If there are trends that you’ve noticed with your target market, detail them here.Competition
Your market analysis isn’t complete without thinking about your competition. Beyond knowing what other businesses you are competing with, a good competitive analysis will point out competitors’ weaknesses that you can take advantage of. With this knowledge, you can differentiate yourself by offering products and services that fill gaps that competitors have not addressed.
When you are analyzing the competition, you should take a look at the following areas.
Direct competition
These are companies that are offering very similar products and services. Your potential customers are probably currently buying from these companies.
Indirect competitors
Think of indirect competition as alternative solutions to the problem you are solving. This is particularly useful and important for companies that are inventing brand new products or services. For example, the first online task management software wasn’t competing with other online task managers—it was competing with paper planners, sticky notes, and other analog to-do lists.
How you’re different
You don’t want to be the same as the competition. Make sure to discuss how your company, product, or service is different than what the competition is offering. For a common business type, such as hair salons, your differentiation might be location, hours, types of services, ambiance, or price.
Barriers to entry
Describe what protections you have in place to prevent new companies from competing with you. Maybe you have a great location, or perhaps you have patents that help protect your business.
The best way to research your competition is to talk to your prospective customers and ask them who they are currently buying from and what alternate solutions they are using to solve the problem you are solving. Of course, spending some time on Google to figure out what else is out there is a great idea as well.Step 4: Pricing and forecast
The final step in a market analysis is to figure out your pricing and create a sales forecast to better understand what portion of the market you think you can get.
First, think about your pricing. Of course, you should ensure that your price is more than what it costs you to make and deliver your product or service. But, beyond that, think about the message that your price sends to consumers. Game about squaresgamerate.
Customers usually link high prices to quality. But, if you are pricing on the higher end of the spectrum, you need to make sure the rest of your marketing is also signaling that you are delivering a high-quality product or service. From what your business looks like to its logo and customer service experience, high-prices should come with a high-quality experience during the entire sales process.
On the other end of the spectrum, maybe you’re competing as a low-priced alternative to other products or businesses. If that’s the case, make sure your marketing and other messaging are also delivering that same, unified message.
Once you have an idea of your pricing, think about how much you expect to sell. Your industry research will come into play here as you think about how much of the overall market you expect to capture. For example, if you’re opening a new type of grocery store, you’ll want to know how much people spend on groceries in your area. Your forecast should reflect a realistic portion of that total spend. It’s probably not realistic to gain 50 percent of the market within your first year.
However, don’t make the mistake of assuming that you can easily get 1 percent of a very large market. 1 percent of a 3 billion dollar market is still $30 million and even though 1 percent seems like a small, attainable number, you need to understand and explain how you will actually acquire that volume of customers.
When you build your forecast, use it as a goal for your business and track your actual sales compared to what you had hoped you would sell. Theatre music, any music designed to form part of a dramatic performance, as, for example, a ballet, stage play, motion picture, or television program. Included are the European operetta and its American form, the musical.
Music as an art of the theatre has its roots in primitive ritual and ceremony and its branches in every modern means of theatrical presentation. Its functions are as varied as the forms require and range from being the primary reason for performance, as in opera, to mere noise, filling a vacuum in imagination for some screen and stage presentations.
Theatre music is all music composed to govern, enhance, or support a theatrical conception. Music composed for theatrical purposes obeys different laws than does the music for concert performance or conventional opera. Whereas in opera the music dictates the form in which the dramatic visual imagery is presented and governs its development, in other kinds of theatre the music is, at best, an equal partner among its principal elements. In concert, of course, the music is the sole factor that determines the experience.
In the West, the concept of music as an intellectual experience for its own sake emerged only in the second half of the 18th century. Theatrical music is variously related to something other than itself, whether as an enrichment of words (as in operetta), a factor in structure and mood (ballet), or an intensification of situation and feeling (as in incidental music for plays and films). In some instances music is dominant, in some it is subservient, and in operetta or stage musical the emphasis alternates between speech, song, and dance. The classical mainstream of theatre music in the West extends from the mid-17th century to the 1930s, and the instances of drama and music meeting on an equal level of imagination are relatively few. More frequently great music was lavished on weak or corrupt theatre, or great drama was embellished with indifferent music. From the early 20th century new dramatic developments were seldom directly matched in music. A German-Italian composer, Ferruccio Busoni, wrote in 1906:

The German composer Kurt Weill’s score for Der Silbersee (1933; The Silver Sea) was the last major musical contribution to a serious play requiring a full orchestra and chorus. Thereafter, for economic reasons, the dramatic theatre had to equip itself with small-group music or prerecorded tapes. The orchestra and chorus became the prerogative of stage musicals and films. The more these were commercially debased the more they came to rely heavily on the clichés of 19th-century music, to the exclusion of newer musical developments.
Producers of stage musicals, the choreographers of dance, and the directors of drama need to be wary of the properties of music. It is more demanding of attention than is often thought, and its use should ideally be confined to circumstances where it can provide something that none of the other theatrical elements can offer. The more its qualities are understood and respected, the better it can be guided to an effective theatrical purpose.Music for ballet
During the 20th century the element of music in all forms of ballet has changed and developed its significance to an unprecedented extent. It has acquired the status of an equal partner with the choreography, where once it was entirely the servant of the ballet master. In the 19th century he asked little more than that the music should decorate his ballets prettily and give rhythmic support to the movements of the dancers. His modern successors have been made aware that the highest level of balletic achievement now requires the music and choreography to become extensions of each other, to be heard and seen on equal levels of perception.
The finest modern choreographers are not content simply to ride the surface of their chosen music, whether it is specially written, borrowed, or adapted. They seek to exploit the relationship of eye and ear, recognizing that the effect of any danced step can be changed by the stress of the musical rhythm, the degree of loud or soft in its dynamics, the nature of its harmonic character, and the expressive quality of its instrumental timbre. All these factors can make a positive contribution to the balletic image, and they give coherence to the sequence of movement as they merge into its continuous momentum. Until the end of the 19th century, each new ballet customarily had music specially composed for it, but it was rare for any composer of distinction to write ballet music, unless it was part of an opera. There were exceptions—such as Beethoven’s score for Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (1801; The Creatures of Prometheus), originally a ballet by an Italian choreographer, Salvatore Viganò—but the great era of Romantic ballet from about 1830 was seldom enhanced by music of intrinsic worth. When ballet gained a musical interest, the difference was soon apparent; it has been well said that Léo Delibes gave ballet music a heart, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky gave it a soul, and Igor Stravinsky made an honest woman of it.
Stravinsky was the dominating figure for nearly half a century (beginning in 1910) in composing music for ballet. He gained international acclaim with the first products of his collaboration with the Ballets Russes of the Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev: The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The first two continue to be performed in their original choreography by Michel Fokine, also a Russian, each with a narrative basis illustrated in music notable for its expressive colour and harmonic innovations. The Rite of Spring provoked one of the most notorious scandals in theatre history when Vaslav Nijinsky’s original ballet reduced its first Paris audience to verbal insult and physical assault; its rhythmic audacity has since remained a recurring challenge to other choreographers.
Largely as a result of the standard set by Diaghilev’s flair and artistic success, most leading composers in the 20th century have contributed something to the art of dance. Diaghilev directly commissioned two outstanding examples in the French composer Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (1912), which the composer defined as a “poème choréographique,” and The Three-cornered Hat (1919) by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Distinctive original scores for ballet continued usually to be the outcome of specific commissions. Composers do not yet normally think in terms of dance (as they do in terms of song), although in Great Britain the composer Peter Maxwell Davies incorporated an integral role for solo dancer in his otherwise instrumental work, Vesalii icones (1969).

The composer was writing from the experience of a long collaboration with a Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, mainly for what is now the New York City Ballet. Their partnership began in 1928 with Apollo, reached a peak in 1957 with Agon, and was to the 20th century what the collaboration of Tchaikovsky with choreographers Marius Petipa from France and Lev Ivanov from Russia was to the 19th.
In the former Soviet Union and present-day Russia, a post-Revolutionary equivalent to the classical three-act narrative ballet has continued to be in demand. This form has been furnished by many composers of ballets that have not been performed outside of Russian cultural circles, but it has been chiefly distinguished by the work of Sergey Prokofiev. His full-length scores for Romeo and Juliet (1940), Cinderella (1948), and The Stone Flower (posthumously staged in 1954) have variously succeeded in reconciling an older classical form to new expressive demands. Its offshoots in western Europe have included, in Great Britain, Benjamin Britten’s music for The Prince of the Pagodas (staged by the Royal Ballet, 1957) and Hans Werner Henze’s music for Ondine (Royal Ballet, 1958).
The stronger emphasis in western Europe and the United States in the late 20th century was on one-act ballets, varying from about 15 minutes’ to more than one hour’s duration. Composers continue to show some reluctance to write music specifically for dancing, partly because they are seldom closely involved with the art and also because they have relatively less control over the finished performance than in opera and in most other forms of musical theatre. Apart from works already mentioned, however, the ballet repertory has been enriched by such scores as the French composer Erik Satie’sParade for Diaghilev in 1917; the British composer Vaughan Williams’ Job (1931) and the English composer Sir Arthur Bliss’sCheckmate (1937) for the British choreographer Ninette de Valois, in Britain; and the American composer Aaron Copland’sAppalachian Spring (1944) and the American composer Samuel Barber’sThe Serpent Heart (1946; later revised as Cave of the Heart, 1947) for the choreographer Martha Graham, in the United States.
Nevertheless, the greater proportion of new ballets in the West during the last half-century have been created to preexisting music, and it is evident that choreographers have felt a greater freedom to experiment visually in the use of such music. The practice dates principally from the first orchestration (by the Russian composer Aleksandr Glazunov, 1894) of an arbitrary suite of piano music by Frédéric Chopin to which Fokine created Chopiniana (1908)—a title retained by Soviet ballet companies for what Diaghilev renamed Les Sylphides (1909). More than 60 years later, another arbitrary suite by Chopin, although retained in its piano form, proved to be no less fruitful for the American choreographer Jerome Robbins in Dances at a Gathering (1969).
Almost every category of music—from medieval music to advanced electronics and from symphonic compositions to the simplest pop tunes—has now been used for choreographic purposes. The function of music in a dance context has varied almost as much—staining the ballet’s surroundings as a kind of aural decor at one extreme, as with the soundscapes of John Cage for Merce Cunningham’s dance works in the United States, to the mutual absorption of music and choreography phrase by phrase in such works as the British choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton’sSymphonic Variations to the music of César Franck (Royal Ballet, 1946), as well as the Balanchine-Stravinsky Agon (1957) and Movements (New York City Ballet, 1963).
Sometimes the same music has been used for several different ballets within a short time by various choreographers. An outstanding example is the Sinfonia by an Italian composer, Luciano Berio, written originally in 1968 as a concert work. By the end of 1971 it had been taken over for at least eight separate ballets in almost as many countries in western Europe alone.
Another trend in ballet in the second half of the 20th century has been to make ballets apparently more concerned with musical associations than with human personality. Instances include Balanchine’s Agon and Movements, already mentioned, and the British choreographer Kenneth (later Sir Kenneth) MacMillan’s The Song of the Earth (1965) to the song-symphony by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. The dancers seem required to assume the “personality,” or expressive character, of the musical instruments they parallel, as if the choreographers were moving toward a form of “ideal” dance once postulated by a French poet, Stéphane Mallarmé, who envisaged music and dance not only as equals but also equally devoid of human personality.
In the view of most ballet critics, the antidote lies in the continuing appeal of narrative dance-dramas with their illustrative music, although the success or otherwise of any ballets that engage preexisting music is basically governed by a single crucial principle: the level of choreographic imagination should never be less than that of the music. A ballet can be better than its music, but it can never afford to be worse. There will always be ballets dependent on music for no more than expressive colour and supporting rhythm, but the “perfect analogous concord between what we see and what we hear,” recommended as the ideal nearly 150 years ago by Carlo Blasis, a great Italian teacher, still remains the most desirable aspiration for every kind of ballet music.Quick Factskey peoplerelated topics

About a month ago, I wrote a blog post about Elizebeth Smith Friedman, one of the founders of American cryptography as we know it. One of the goals of that post was to help correct the historical record and restore Elizebeth to the prominence, accolades, and attention she so richly deserves.
A friend of mine and fellow tabletop roleplayer read that post and pointed me toward this article from Kotaku last year about the early influence of women on the development of the iconic roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. One of the first playable modules, the “Sage Advice” column of Dragon magazine, the inimitable art style (and maps), the long-running D&D series of novels… women played vital roles in crafting the world of D&D as many of us know it today.
This may come as a surprise to some people, given how pop culture tends to present roleplaying in general as an all-male nerdy pursuit. (The Big Bang Theory, for instance, often pushes the idea that girls don’t play D&D.)
But to me, it’s no surprise at all that women played such important roles in the development of one of tabletop gaming’s most famous franchises. Women have always been a part of roleplaying in my experience. Whether we’re talking LARPs (Live-Action RolePlaying) or tabletop, in my group of friends, female players were the norm.

The longest-running game I’ve ever been a part of — one that we’ve played on and off for over a decade — has had a brilliant female DM [dungeon master / game runner / storyteller]. Women made up half of the players in the Star Wars-based RPG campaign I ran for nearly seven years. The all-guy game that serves as the cliche sitcom punchline was rarely the case.
But I never want to assume that my experience is the same as everyone else’s. So I decided to reach out to some of the female RPG fans, game-runners, and creators I know to get their take on roleplaying games.
How did they get into RPGs? What effect has roleplaying had on their lives, their own personal creativity, and so on? And has the roleplaying world changed, either favorably or unfavorably, for them as women during their time as roleplayers?
To start, I think my friend Addie wrote the perfect intro:
Twenty years ago I was dating a guy who asked, “Do you want to play Dungeons & Dragons?” and not really knowing what it was I said, “Sure why not.” Ever since that first game it felt like I found something that I was looking for, a doorway to a fantasy world I was unfamiliar with yet interested in.
D&D was the first step into a world that introduced me to other means of roleplaying, from LARPing to MMO’s [massive multiplayer online games] to text-based games online. It allowed me to exercise my creativity and become more comfortable with writing. It lead me to learn that I love to write, especially creating characters, and eventually I even co-started a text-based Marvel game called MUCK that had a successful seven years until I burned out and couldn’t run a game on my own anymore.
Sometimes, it’s a boyfriend who introduces the game. Other times, it’s a friend, as in Lindsay’s experience:
I started gaming when I was 14 or 15 (1990ish) when my female best friend bought a copy of the AD&D Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual [the three core books required for D&D] on a whim one day and she ran a game for me and her brother and, I think, a friend of her brother’s.
I’d been exposed to the idea of D&D several years before when the blue box set came out, and another female friend’s brother had it and the dice on his desk. I was utterly fascinated by the idea and wanted to play, but of course we were the Little Sister and friends, so we weren’t invited.
In Jala’s case, it was her sister:
When I was 10, my sister brought home a boxed set of D&D (the original edition) which had a map, module & etc. She was my first DM and first tabletop RPG buddy… RPGs were a way to bond with my sister originally, and later on when online RPGs were a thing it was the manner in which my sister met her husband, and the way I met my best friend (now ex-husband, though we are still friends).
But no matter how they discovered roleplaying, it made an immediate impact.
Beverly credits quite a bit to her experience roleplaying:
It changed my life by helping me form and solidify friendships. I even met my second husband because of RPGs (online and not pencil and paper) and that’s pretty rad.
It also helped me gain some confidence early on when I started game-mastering. I was pressured (in a friendly way) to try my hand at being a game master. I didn’t think I could do it, but I was with a group of trusted friends and I tried it out. It went pretty well, and because being the leader and helping guide the story had gone well in that trusted environment, I felt more empowered to try it at a small convention with people I didn’t know as well.
Those people ALSO had a good time, and each experienced helped me feel more capable in speaking in front of strangers, and if I’m being perfectly honest, also how to fake a bit of confidence at first to help me get started.
Lindsay also credits gaming as a huge factor in her life:
How has gaming affected my life? I laugh: it has been one of the two biggest parts of my life for most of my life. I met the most important people in my life through gaming, whether it be tabletop, writing for the games, or LARPing: my best friends since high school, my general social group, and my husband.
Gaming certainly helped broaden my creativity — collaborating with my best friends when we wrote tournaments or created a whole world to set games in brought so much to the forefront. Cultural knowledge, intricacy in political situations, and depth of character all came into it and we all boosted each other’s creativity. I also like playing all different races, classes, attitudes, and genders when I play — just to see what it’ll be like and to bring different parts of my personality out.
That being said, there has definitely been a sea change in how women in roleplaying have been viewed over the last twenty to thirty years.
Beverly:I have been at it in some form or another since about 1992 and mostly I have had good experiences but there have been some pretty bad ones. I think it has gotten a bit better for me over the years, but admittedly I am not as into it as I used to be.
Addie:The world has definitely become more welcoming to female gamers, at least in my experience. For many years I hid my gender online when roleplaying or playing MMOs, tending to play male characters. I never told anyone I was female but I didn’t tell anyone I wasn’t male and just let them assume. I’m sure there are people out there who are still convinced to this day I was a dude behind the screen.
Now, I have no issues with hiding my gender. The harassment isn’t there like it used to be, I’m not the “golden egg” of female roleplayers anymore.
Lindsay’s experience working inside the world of RPGs grants her a particular insight into how things have changed:
As for my own career, I wrote and edited for several game studios throughout my 20s and 30s. White Wolf in particular liked employing women in the office, but I don’t think that was really because they were committed to diversity. I think it was more because “Wimminz In Gamez Iz Edgy and Cool.” Yes, the women were incredibly capable and remain powerful writers and gamers, but still.
I work in a comic, card, and game store now, the same one where I host and play games. The customers’ attitudes are a mixed bag, really, but overall they are friendly and respectful of me as a woman and an expert. Some are overtly sexist and assholes about it – “uh, can you get [man]? I have questions. No, I don’t think you know about this, can you just get [man]?”
And yep, I know more than the man does.
That idea of “nerd cred” being checked, unfortunately, isn’t the exclusive domain of male players. My friend Athena confessed that female players can also make it hard to get into gaming:
I didn’t want to identify myself as a female RPGer to those that may attack me. I readily tell people I enjoy tabletop, RPG, and other video games in real life, but often (especially in groups of people that already somewhat know me) when I say “oh I love that game”, I get checked for my nerd card. Testing responses from people trying to make me prove I actually am a gamer… I got into D&D in the early days of high school because it looked like fun and my friend-group played. Since then, I personally have always found it somewhat difficult to “break into” new groups.
It’s been a generation since the early days of D&D, and thankfully, being a female RPGer is far more common, even if it can be hard for new players to get started.Game About Squares Unblocked
Addie:It’s also nice because female Roleplayers aren’t the rarity they used to be.
Lindsay:I also feel like being a woman among gamers gives us a way to feel special sometimes in a world that stigmatizes, belittles, or outright ostracizes smart, creative women who don’t fit the physical or otherwise mold of what a Strong Female Character ought to be. It seems like a poor sort of evaluation, but … it’s true. Among the usual population, we’re just kind of weird, with weird interests. Among gamers, we’re rare and fascinating. That’s nice to feel sometimes.
And on the other hand, that same rare and fascinating thing crosses very quickly, very often into creepiness and even sexual inappropriateness. It’s kind of scary sometimes as a woman to walk into a new game group and have no idea what the guys are going to be like.
Jala:I can’t say that I ever experienced the kinds of horror stories you read about on Buzzfeed, myself, so my personal exchanges have ranged from being blase (occasionally with new folks I didn’t know) to absolutely hilarious (when my gay male friend was playing a flirty straight woman and I was playing a straight man whom his character hit on for example, the role reversal was funny to everyone). The respect of my personal authority was never challenged even as a teenage female DM with older people as my players, although I did exasperate a DM or two with my out-of-the-box thinking as a player. That, however, had nothing to do with my gender.
Athena:Whenever I play tabletop games — Magic, board games, D&D. etc. — the (mostly male) players don’t care AT ALL who I am. It’s generally an extremely welcoming community in person.
Lindsay:Things have absolutely changed over time. Women have gone from being only princesses to be rescued; bar wenches; prostitutes; and the subject of lonely-artist posters to writing the rules systems; being the examples of particular classes or races in said books; having a voice and presence online and in media; and more respected equals as players and writers. We still have things to overcome, but we have come SO far.
Jala:Initially although my “core group” was comprised of my sister and whatever friends (all male) we could rope into it, these days there are many more female gamers of all flavors. From being an outlier in what was a fairly esoteric and clique-filled community, I have (female and male) friends who own comic & gaming shops and run games for kids and single-session adventures for those who can only drop in from time to time. I think that the voice of women is more pronounced now and there is definitely more representation of my gender out there which is great.
Addie:When I was at PAX EAST in 2014 and playing the Pathfinder Mods, one of the random groups my friend and I got put together with ended up being all females. We had so much fun we played three modules together and the GM was shocked to find out we weren’t a regular group, just a handful of pairs of strangers. We weren’t put together because all of us were female, we were put together because we were the players waiting for a group. Ten years ago, there wouldn’t be enough women at a Tabletop booth to put a 7-player group together.
Although things are changing and the pendulum of acceptance and inclusiveness is swinging in the right direction, it’s still amazing the impact that one or two strong female voices can have in attracting and empowering other players.
Lindsay:A guy came up to me at the game store I work at to ask me how many women play D&D. He said his wife and he had played some online D&D and loved it, but she in particular was hesitant to try it in person because she felt uncomfortable with the idea of being a female newbie in a room full of guys.
I realized that this reluctance might be more common than anyone realized, and I thought about the fact that even I, a lifelong gamer, am always reassured when there’s even one other woman on a table. Thus was born my Thursday women-only D&D table. Now I have more interest than seats available at the table! One of my players said, after the last session, that she really, really enjoys playing with just women, that there’s so much less pressure to know everything off the top of your head and that roleplaying is so much more fun.
My stated goal with the game is not only to give women a table of our own but also to welcome and encourage newer gamers or total beginners. It’s a safe space for all women, and I specified that trans women are women and therefore welcome too … Safe. Space. And we’re having a good time!
Addie:I’ve also found that being a female roleplayer with 20 years of D&D under her belt, I’ve been able to help other, younger, women with getting into tabletop roleplaying. A lot of the younger roleplayers I meet online nowadays are mostly younger females who do a lot of text-based roleplaying. Now that they’re starting to get their feet wet with tabletop, they’ve come to me with questions, and I thoroughly enjoy being a “Geek Mom” to young girls.
It was a privilege talking to these women and gaining some valuable insight into the world of roleplaying games from their point of view. Just reading these stories made me even more grateful that my personal experiences with RPGs have been so positive. Seeing these amazing, creative, hilarious, and brilliant women help to shape the roleplaying community for the better… it’s something special.
I’d like to close with something Lindsay said. It is part optimism, part mission statement, and wholly appropriate to the subject at hand:
When things like Gamergate simply don’t happen any more because women’s voices are automatically respected, we’ll have gotten somewhere. Meanwhile, I’ll keep reaching out to women in gaming and helping the ones I can as well as doing what I love best.

Just to be clear, I am not a gamer. The only video game I ever successfully completed was Jill of the Jungle, which we owned on floppy disk when I was a kid.

In fact, up until this past year I would have argued that video games don’t really have any redeeming qualities. At worst, they are a hotbed of misogyny and xenophobia, as chronicled by female gamers on websites like Not in the Kitchen Anymore and Fat, Ugly or Slutty. At best, they are like a bottomless pit where the lives of children and adults disappear, never to resurface.
Although I suppose the same could be said about pretty well anything.
This year a good friend convinced me to try a Digital Humanities class at my University. For those of you who haven’t heard of the field before (I hadn’t either), Wikipedia defines it as the “intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities”. If you want to see some examples of the kind of research being done in the field, you could check out two of mypast posts describing DH scholar Lisa Nakamura’s guest lectures at my university.
While this class has challenged the way I see technology in general, it has particularly challenged my very negative perception of video games. In fact, Ian Bogost, one of the DH scholars we studied in the course, argues that games can form powerful arguments and unique social critiques. In his book, Persuasive Games, Bogost describes arguments made by a game as “procedural rhetoric“, or, more simply as “the art of persuasion through rule-based representations and interactions, rather than the spoken word, writing, images, or moving pictures”.Game About Squares
Below, I’ve included four examples of persuasive games my DH professor shared with the class. Each of these games make relevant and thoughtful arguments that wouldn’t have been as effective if they didn’t appear in their procedural form.
The Parable of the Polygons
Vi Hart and Nicky Case preface their simple browser game by stating that “This is a story of how harmless choices can make a harmful world.” Hart and Case explain that the triangles and squares are “slightly shapist”. This means that the shapes prefer some level of diversity around them, but will become unhappy if they feel isolated in their community. Players are then asked to drag and drop the shapes until all of the squares and triangles are happy with the community of shapes around them.
Once the player begins moving the shapes, it becomes apparent that even a slight bias will lead to large scale segregation. Continue reading

Offering great client service not only builds a loyal and happy customer base, but can be the most powerful tool due to word-of-mouth referrals.
A 2013 study by Dimensional Research for Zendesk found 62 percent of -to-business and 42 percent of business-to-consumer customers purchased more after enjoying a great customer-service experience. On the flip side, the same survey discovered 95 percent of customers share bad experiences with their network, compared to the 87 percent sharing a positive experience.

How can be improved? Here are six ways:
1. Truly listen. Offer expertise, but make sure employees are listening as much as they talk. Great service isn’t about forcing a strategy that doesn’t work for the customer. Try to balance being an expert with listening to concerns and providing what customers think is right for their needs.
2. Be responsive. Customers want service, fast. Even if the full answer can’t be delivered immediately, always email back the same day. Keep the customer looped into the process, and make sure they understand everyone is doing their best to ensure issues are being addressed quickly and fully.
For example, a Software Advice survey tested various customer service scenarios on respondents, comparing a formal tone to a casual one. While 65% of online customers — across all ages and genders — prefer a casual tone in customer service over a formal one, the numbers change significantly when the customer is being denied a request.
3. Accommodate customers. Unfortunately, customers can drop the ball just as often as companies. Sometimes a client will show up late to a call and sometimes a customer won’t have all the relevant information service-team members need to provide assistance.
*A warm smile, a positive attitude, attentiveness and motivation. These are all the qualities of an engaged customer service representative and also the qualities necessary for making a customer happy. Human emotions, regardless positive or negative, are easily transmittable.
*Customers want service, fast. Even if the full answer can’t be delivered immediately, always email back the same day. Keep the customer looped into the process, and make sure they understand.
While it can be easy to get aggravated, it’s important to accommodate customer needs. Keep in mind that every customer or client is a potential ambassador, meaning every interaction can be a selling point or a barrier to attracting more business.

4. Build trust. A company-customer relationship does not need to be strictly platonic. Going the extra mile and showing passion for the client builds loyalty, trust and a longer customer relationship.
5. Live the company values. To ensure a great client-service experience, the company needs to make service an important cultural value. When creating a , standard practices, or a , highlight the importance of customer service. Making service a baked-in part of the culture means employees will be more likely to live the company’s values on a day-to-day basis, and create better service outcomes.
6. Don’t grow too quickly. Don’t sacrifice quality in lieu of hunger for growth. At the end of the day, happy customers lead to word-of-mouth referrals and an overall positive company brand, image and reputation. This organic and steady growth is what will lead to a healthy company.
Client service is an integral part of any growing company. The best way to deliver amazing service is to listen, build trust and be responsive to customer needs. Keep in mind, a great service experience has the power to turn customers into fans, and clients into brand ambassadors for the company.

Be aware of your customer’s comfort zone and increase or decrease your distance accordingly. Adjust your behavior when a customer shows that you are too close or too distant.14. Summarize conversations
Summarize the main point of the conversation before engaging in the problem solving process. This will demonstrate that you were listening attentively. It will also facilitate a mutual understanding between you and customer.
Applying these 14 call center customer service techniques will increase the professionalism and effectiveness of customer interactions. If fostered within all employees, they can increase the quality of the level of customer service provided by a company and transform how employees interact with customers.
